In the early 1950s, it became ever more difficult for artists like Mary Lou Williams to find enough and - probably more important - satisfying as well as challenging work in America. Europe promised both work and recognition. Little wonder Mary Lou Williams decided to try her luck in the Old World. Between late 1952 and Dec. 1954, the pianist-composer lived in London and Paris. She was able to make a number of excellent sessions during her extended stay as an expatriate. The pianist's arrangement of "Handy Eyes" is stunning: she weaves swinging and modern patterns from W.C. Handy's old yarn entitled "St. Louis Blues".
