'While you could say they're working loosely in the realm of Folk Pop, the Philly-based trio Maggi, Pierce And E.J. is certain to shatter any preconceived notions. Not that the group-made up of two former members of the live Hip Hop crew The Goats-is blindly blasting away at the foundations. Their most recent CD impacts more by it's creative and subtle eccentricities the individual songwriters bring into the familiarity. The group's songs roll with a stream of consciousness flow pulling from a limitless supply of inspirations and influences while never losing it's oddly distinct catchiness. MP&E has an almost Zappa-esque feel, not soundwise but in their expressive, boundless approach. Quirky without being goofy, poppy without being pandering, they're a clever group of artists who explore the elasticity of the status quo without shattering the mold. The new disc is a superb melding of modern day folk-rock with an alternative slant. It even hints at bands like the Beatles. Best cuts on this excellent disc are the muscular rock of Sweeter and the ballad, Smyle, which features Maggi on lead and has wonderful harmonies.
