For his third (and best!) Liquid City release as leader of his Seattle-based ensemble, Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto has created a collection of pieces dedicated to his hometown of Rio de Janeiro which was nominated as Best Latin Jazz Album for the 2004 Latin Grammys. Primeval grooves such as the maracatu, batuque, marcha, xoxote and maxixe are woven with contemporary harmonies and world-class jazz musicianship. Featuring Jovino's award-winning 10 year old Quinteto (Deardorf, Ivester, Teuber, Busch) plus special guest musicians (Mike Marshall - mandolin, Flora McGill - voice, Harvey Wainapel - horns), this excellent recording will please all Jazz, world and Brazilian music lovers.
