The sounding of the deep-toned bell of the Dresden Kreuzkirche links two of Mauersberger's most moving works: The Dresdner Requiem, written in 1947/48 in memory of the victims of the Second World War, and the motet of mourning, Wie liegt die Stadt, composed following the bombing of Dresden on February 13, 1945.
