Although this 21 track collection of gospel music from 1947-51 aims to honor an individual artist, Prof. James Earle Hines, it just as much pays homage to the St. Paul Baptist Church Choir of Los Angeles, whose first director was Hines. While the choir emerged as the most distinguished black gospel choir on the American West Coast in the late 1940s, Hines became gospel's first postwar male star. This CD contains songs that were recorded during church services and in the studio in Hollywood and Los Angeles.
