Product Notes
Originally released by Innova Recordings in 1996, Nyahh Records is delighted to reissue this groundbreaking and pioneering work of electronic and acoustic work in a deluxe 2 disc set with a booklet containing new essays and never seen before photos. This collection includes recordings made between 1973 and 1985 including some of David Dunn's work which he considers his 'Environmental Sounds Works', which include large scale pieces recorded in the Grand Canyon with up to 26 musicians spread out over half a mile. Each musician playing off a graphic score, with the sound of the musicians stretching as far as two miles through the canyon. "The score specified sound gestures which the trumpets could articulate interactively with the canyon environment. The interaction primarily focused upon 1) the extended reverberation and extraordinary spatial acoustics of the rock formations and 2) the non-human life forms such as the crows heard throughout the performance recording." Other recordings were done in the Cuyamaca Mountains of California and other National Parks. The focus always being on how the sound of humans and instruments interact with the natural environment. About David Dunn: Composer and sound artist David Dunn was born in 1953 in San Diego (California, USA). From 1970 to 1974 he was assistant to the American composer Harry Partch and remained active as a performer in the Harry Partch Ensemble for over a decade. He has worked in a wide variety of audio media inclusive of traditional and experimental music, installations for public exhibitions, video and film soundtracks, radio broadcasts, and bioacoustic research. His compositions and wildlife sound recordings have appeared in hundreds of international forums, concerts, broadcasts, and exhibitions. He was director of the Electronic Music Studio at San Diego State University and has taught and lectured at numerous schools and universities. From 1984 to 1988 he was Vice-President of International Synergy Institute, a media think tank centered in Hollywood, California. In 1989 he co-founded the Independent Media Labs in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Currently he is a Professor in the College of Santa Fe's Contemporary Music Program and President of the Art and Science Laboratory in Santa Fe. Genre: Experimental / Field Recording
