Product Notes
Starring Leonard Nimoy in one of the most powerful performances of his career, this stirring film, based on a true story, tells of one man's fight for justice. Mel Mermelstein (Nimoy, Star Trek) is offered $50,000 by the Institute for Historical Review, a revisionist group, to prove that certain events of the Holocaust actually occurred. Mermelstein turns to a lawyer, Bill Cox (Dabney Coleman, War Games), who advises him to accept the offer, create a binding contract, present his evidence and sue if they fail to pay. In order to win the case, Mermelstein must convince a U.S. Court to take judicial notice of the Holocaust for the first time in U.S. judicial history. Mermelstein accepts the challenge as his duty. He and his family had been imprisoned in Auschwitz in 1944 and he alone survived, haunted by the memory of those who died. Mermelstein risks losing his job, his wife (Blythe Danner, Brighton Beach Memoirs) and family, and maybe even his life, to keep the promise he made to his dying father to "be a witness to the world." Now he has taken the stand to be a witness. But can Mermelstein keep the promise?
