Product Notes
Newly re-mastered in HD - the great George Stevens (A Place in the Sun) directed the third and final teaming of Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, they first appeared together in Leo McCarey's the Awful Truth and later in Garson Kanin's My Favorite Wife. While listening to a recording of "Penny Serenade", Julie Gardiner Adams (Dunne) begins reflecting on her past. She recalls her near-impulsive marriage to newspaper reporter Roger Adams (Grant), which begins on a deliriously happy note but turns out be fraught with tragedy. Penny Serenade is enormously effective, balancing moments of heartbreaking pathos with uproarious laughter. The stellar cast includes Beulah Bondi, Ann Doran and Edgar Buchanan. Cary Grant earned his first Academy Award nomination in this beautiful and heartwarming masterpiece.
