Product Notes
When Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jim McCarty was asked to come to Memphis for a spontaneous recording session with some Memphis bluesmen, he enthusiastically accepted the invitation. Nearly 30 years earlier, he and his bandmates, the Yardbirds, had come to Memphis to record at Sun Studio. Now, with former Canned Heat bassist Richard Hite at the helm as producer, the session for Weekend in Memphis went very well - over an hour's worth of material was recorded in less than 3 days - the climate of the session was open and creative while elements of blues, rock, and jazz exploded into the air and were captured on tape. The best of these tracks were selected for Weekend in Memphis. While the core studio players (Richard Hite on bass, Jim McCarty on drums and percussion, Danny Lancaster on vocals and guitar, and Robert Tooms on piano) provide the heart and soul, guests artists include Billy Gibson on harmonica, Blind Mississippi Morris on harmonica and vocals, Sandy Carroll on vocals, and Brad Webb on electric and slide guitar. From the catchy sing-along track 'Memphis Town' to Danny Lancaster's haunting and emotional rendition of the blues classic 'So Many Roads, So Many Trains,' Weekend in Memphis encompasses a broad spectrum of blues that is convincing and a must have for any serious fan of blues or rock.
