Discs 1 and 2 of this collection cover Miller as a sideman, and his own early band sides before the days of his commercial success (1926-1937). Discs 3 and 4 mark the start of the his Victor recording contract, and also marks the "breakthrough" recording of his signature tune "Moonlight Serenade" and "Little Brown Jug" (his first hit). The set also includes live performances from April 1939 taken off-air from the prestigious Meadowbank Ballroom and the Glen Island Casino.
