Charles Coburn is millionaire department store owner John Merrick who decides to investigate rumors that his workers are planning to unionize by going undercover as a shoe sales clerk. Along the way he comes to understand his employees' problems and winds up playing Cupid for fellow clerk Mary (Jean Arthur) and union activist Joe (Robert Cummings).
