New York City-based tenor saxophonist Ned Otter presents his second release as a leader. This CD features two suites, one utilizing rarely performed works from the Nat Cole songbook and another based on the most fundamental of jazz materials, the blues. Otter showcases his arranging and compositional abilities, scoring this session for five horns plus rhythm. Working with him are some of the best NYC musicians, including drummer Mark Taylor, and veterans Harold Mabern and Jamil Nasser. Otter shows his ability to swing with sophistication and soul, while reiterating the fundamentals of 4/4 swing, the blues, the ballad, and Afro-Latin rhythms.
