In the 1890s, artist and activist Catherine Weldon (Jessica Chastain) left Brooklyn behind and sojourned to the Dakota Territory to fulfill her long-held dream of living amongst the Sioux. Convincing Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes) to sit for a portrait, she becomes the chief's confidante, but her efforts to plead for the Lakota people's autonomy would meet with shattering disappointment.
